Creating an Intentional Safe Haven in your Home

When you walk into your home, you are entering into one of your most important environments. The world can be difficult enough — the safety of the home becomes even more important to preserve. It takes effort and preparedness to create a harmonious and safe haven.

Intentionality is critical. And it starts with a cue — the turning of the doorknob. The moment you come home and touch that doorknob, remind yourself: leave all the stress of the outside world behind and bring forth your best self. Choose to operate in attunement with your vision, e.g. a peaceful, loving, caring, and safe environment where all members of the family are valued.

I often tell my clients: check yourself before you wreck yourself. In our day-to-day experiences, this translates to building awareness of yourself and your surroundings and avoiding knee-jerk reactions and problematic, automatic responses.

The trick is to make conscious, proactive choices — and doing so takes practice. It’s like building muscle with strength training. Over time, a 20lb dumbbell becomes easier to lift. The same is true for behavior. Consistent practice leads to new habits and growth.

The turn of the doorknob is your cue to become present and make the conscious effort to set the tone for the environment in your home. It’s a reminder to save the best of you for your family.
